When is World Day for Safety and Health at Work?

World Day for Safety and Health at Work takes place every year on 28th April. The day is recognised internationally and is used to highlight the importance of protecting workers and promoting safer environments across all industries.

What is World Day for Safety and Health at Work?

World Day for Safety and Health at Work is a global awareness campaign led by the International Labour Organisation (ILO) and recognised across the United Nations.

The purpose of the day is to encourage organisations, government and workers to reflect on workplace safety and discuss the challenges that affect health and safety across different sectors. It also provides an opportunity to raise awareness of both existing and emerging risks, while promoting practical measures that help prevent workplace accidents, injuries and occupational diseases.

Why is This Day Important?

The day was first promoted by the International Labour Organisation (ILO) in 2003 as a way of encouraging a global culture of prevention in workplace safety.

While regulations and safety systems play an important role, preventing accidents is a shared responsibility. Employers, employees, industry bodies and government all play a part in creating a safer workplace.

Raising awareness helps organisations take a step back and review whether their safety practices, procedures and working environments are supporting the wellbeing of their workforce.

What is the Theme for World Day for Safety and Health at Work 2026?

The 2026 World Day for Safety and Health at Work will focus on the psychosocial working environment. More information about the 2026 theme is expected to be released by the ILO in the coming weeks.

What was Last Year’s Safety and Health at Work Focus?

The 2025 World Day for Safety and Health at Work explored the role of artificial intelligence and digitalisation in workplace safety. The campaign looked at how new technologies can help organisations identify risks, improve monitoring, and support safer working environments.

More information on the 2025 theme can be found here: World Day for Safety and Health at Work 2025 | International Labour Organization
