Waste management plays a big part too. Skips should be positioned sensibly, combustible waste should be cleared regularly, and storage near site boundaries should be controlled to reduce the risk of arson.

Good housekeeping is one of the simplest and most effective fire prevention measures.

Fire Detection, Alarms and Extinguishers

Temporary fire detection systems are becoming more common, particularly on larger projects or high-risk builds. They can provide early warning when the site is unoccupied, which is useful given how quickly construction fires can spread.

Fire extinguishers should be available, appropriate to the risks, and maintained. People also need to know where they are and how to use them. There’s not much point in having equipment on site is no one is confident enough to act.

Emergency procedures should be clear and communicated during inductions and toolbox talks. Assembly points, alarm signals, and responsibilities all need to be understood by everyone on site.

Training, Inductions, and Supervision

Fire safety isn’t just about equipment and paperwork. People need to understand the risks and the rules.

Site inductions should cover fire procedures, smoking policies, hot works control, and emergency arrangements. Toolbox talks can be used to reinforce key points, especially when the site layout or risks change.

Supervision matters as well. Rules only work if they’re enforced, and supervisors are usually the ones who spot unsafe practices early.

What Often Goes Wrong

In reality, the issues are usually quite basic. Poor housekeeping, hot works without controls, temporary electric left unchecked, and unclear emergency procedures are common.

Another issue is complacency. If nothing has gone wrong for a while, people assume it never will. Construction fires are relatively rare compared to other incidents, but when they happen, the consequences can be severe.
