- Provide unlimited access to clean, cool drinking water on site. Water stations should be conveniently located and regularly replenished.
- Encourage workers to drink before, during, and after work. Hydrating before starting the day helps maintain fluid balance, and regular sips throughout the day prevent dehydration.
- Aim for 8 ounces (about 240ml) of water every 15–20 minutes in hot conditions. However, do not exceed 48 ounces (1.4 litres) per hour to avoid overhydration.
- Avoid energy drinks and alcohol. These can contribute to dehydration and increase the risk of heat illness.
- Promote healthy eating. Regular meals help replace salts and electrolytes lost through sweat.
