#SafeDay2025
World Safety and Health Day 2025: the role of AI and digitalization at work.
In the run-up to World Safety and Health Day 2025, we will continue to dive into this year’s topic of AI and digitalization at work. In this post, we will be focusing on Smart Occupational Safety and Health Systems, and how you can utilise them to improve your company’s Health and Safety.
What are Smart Occupational Safety and Health Systems?
Smart Occupational Safety and Health Systems are advanced technologies which can collect, analyse and utilise health and safety data in order to identify, assess and prevent risks within the workplace.
These systems aim to prevent and minimise harm alongside promoting occupational safety and health.
What can Smart Occupational Safety and Health Systems monitor?
These advanced systems can monitor a wide range of risks, including:
Physical factors such as Noise, Vibrations and Temperatures.
Ergonomic factors such as repetitive movements and postures.
Chemical factors such as inflammables, emissions and toxic substances.
Psychosocial factors such as stress, anxiety and depression.
These Smart OSH Systems often incorporate a wide range of developing technologies, such as sensors, Bluetooth and more.
Examples of Occupational Health and Safety Systems
OSH Smart Control Centre
The European Agency for Safety and Health at Work studied the use of an IT-based system for advanced safety management. This system acts as a hub for data analysis, which records all information relevant to the company’s Occupational Safety and Health. The system then uses this data in order to pull live reports and information for the company’s upper health and safety management, allowing for the reporting of risks on construction sites.
Smart PPE & Wearables
Smart PPE, such as smartwatches and other wearable equipment, can be utilised by the construction workforce to detect early signs of risks to their health. This can be physical or even mental fatigue.
Hurst Setter Safety Portal
Our very own Safety and Health Portal is a fabulous example of an Occupational Health and Safety System at work in the real world.
The Safety Portal gives our Construction Clients the capability to monitor each and every one of their sites’ health and safety live, being able to pull reports and scoring makes their health and safety managers’ job much more efficient. The system is also integrated seamlessly with our Health and Safety Services; for example, each and every Site Inspection report is uploaded into our client’s portal login, where they can access the results from anywhere in the world.
Enhance, Not Replace!
As emphasised by the European Agency for Safety and Health at Work, Digital OSH monitoring systems shouldn’t replace existing OSH procedures but rather should be used to ENHANCE them. OSH systems are a fabulous tool for analysis and efficiency, and should be utilised alongside your current procedures.
Construction employees are encouraged not to excessively rely on these Smart OSH systems and remember their limitations, to stay compliant. It is essential not to disregard current physical Occupational Safety and Health Frameworks that are in place.
